As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s time to honour the incredible people who have shaped our lives in different ways, with a thoughtful gift for the home.

Below, Boutique Homes’ Interior Designer, Nicole Messina, steps you through her favourite home gift ideas:

1. Elevated bedroom style

Nothing transforms the overall style of a bedroom more than a fresh bedding set in seasonal tones.

‘Look for textured fabrics in warm, rich hues, reminiscent of changing autumn landscapes,’ says Nicole. ‘Trending colours include burnt orange, earthy browns and golden yellows.’

As temperatures begin to cool, opt for bedding in soft, thicker materials such as flannel, fleece or cotton.

2. Foster a relaxing ambiance with high-tech scents

Modern diffusers offer an aesthetic and convenient way to create a sense of warmth and nostalgia within the home.

‘Unlike traditional diffusers, many smart diffusers don’t require water or heat to operate, making them safer for young children and pets,’ says Nicole.

There are a range of sleek diffuser styles on the market to suit any design, all crafted to blend seamlessly into the home’s décor. The secret is to find the perfect fit.

‘Timber-look diffusers are perfect for Hamptons, modern boho or coastal themed living,’ says Nicole. ‘For a more contemporary feel, look for sculptural or pill shaped diffusers in black metal or glass.’

3. Create a personalised flower arrangement

Instead of purchasing flowers, consider making your own for an extra special touch. Flower arrangements are surprisingly easy to create and can be crafted with a unique design in mind. Below, Nicole steps through the top tips to creating your own unique arrangement.

Select flowers that match the decor

“First, select a variety of in-season flowers in varying shapes and sizes. Just make sure you match the colour palette to the home,” says Nicole.

“For a more contemporary home, stick to minimalist white blooms in a geometric or sculptural vase. For a lighter coastal look, experiment with a mix of softer hues such as blues, white and pale pink blooms.”

“Alternatively, stick to one shade to provide a more elegant, high-end feel,’ suggests Nicole.

Preparation and placement

“Cut the bottom of each stem on an angle and trim any leaves or thorns,” says Nicole. “ Place the most focal feature flowers at the centre of your bouquet. Then, add in small blooms and foliage to create depth and balance

The finishing touches

“Keep your flowers in place by wrapping the stems with a coloured ribbon that suits the arrangement and the décor of the home,” says Nicole.
