Rustic charm is the quintessential base for an American farmhouse interior design style. Add in a modern twist and you’re looking at the style of the Airlie 38 display home at Highlands Estate in Craigieburn.

Inspired by the reclaimed San Selmo bricks chosen for the Hamptons façade, Senior Interior Designer, Mitra Whittle, added a rugged treatment to the interiors to suit any city dweller.

‘With so many people making the move from inner-city Melbourne to coastal or country areas, many new home builders are looking for a more urban interior to help them stand out from the sea of coastal concepts,’ says Mitra.

Below, Mitra walks you through the Modern American Farmhouse style and the features used in our Airlie 38 display home.

1. Create a dark and earthy base palette

American Farmhouse is all about earthy browns and moody greys that remind you of rolling country hillsides. In our Highlands display home, Mitra offset the red-brown timber-look floors and crisp white walls with dark grey carpets to the bedrooms and woven rugs to the living spaces.

‘A few key areas feature a darker base colour, especially the Polytec Cinder cabinetry and black metal pendants in the kitchen as well as feature walls throughout,’ explains Mitra.

2. Add interest with feature walls

Timber cladding feature walls help to add dimension and elegance to key rooms while keeping with the country feels.

‘I’ve used timber cladding in both downstairs living areas to create a formal space that’s both intimate and interesting. It ties in quite well with the kitchen cabinetry as well,’ says Mitra.

‘You’ll also notice timber panelling in the master suite that helps tie everything together nicely.’

3. Incorporate barn features throughout your styling

Mitra kept the more permanent aspects of the home modern and stylish, such as the cabinetry while bringing in country elements through the feature lighting and styling.

‘In the Highlands display, you’ll notice we enhanced the kitchen and living space with barn style pendants over the island bench and dining table,’ says Mitra.

‘Adding a rustic charm to your home can be as simple as choosing barn style fixtures and fittings, like a barn style sink and feature tapware in your wet areas.’

4. Integrate eclectic furniture

One of the great advantages of the Modern American Farmhouse aesthetic is that it gives you the freedom to mix and match furniture.

‘From dark or natural timber elements to rattan and cane mixed with black metal, it all works with the farmhouse interior design,’ explains Mitra. ‘My only advice would be to keep accent colours to a minimum. Instead, opt for organic textures such as linen for upholstery.’

Break up the darker hues of your furniture with off-white chaise sofas to the living spaces, tobacco scatter cushions and a feature armchair in tan leather.

5. Make a statement with rustic artworks

When choosing your artworks, try to balance contemporary works with hints of nostalgia.

‘Monochromatic or sepia-tinged photographic prints are reminiscent of a bygone era and create a sense of homeliness,’ says Mitra. ‘Mix in edgy, abstract prints in blacks and browns to maintain an urban feel.’
