‘The stress of the recent pandemic has caused many young professionals and families to seek out the more relaxed lifestyle of Victoria’s regional areas. But just because you’ve opted for a tree-change, doesn’t mean the interiors of your home need to adhere to a traditional country aesthetic,’ says Kat.
‘A minimalist metro interior design offers a sleek, moody feel while still paying homage to the beauty of nature through the softness of tans and blues.’
Below, Kat walks you through the three steps to creating a minimalist and modern interior design style.
Step one – Add shades of black
The key to this style is through the considered use of black. ‘Black joinery is seriously trending, and the kitchen is the perfect place to play with this standout feature,’ says Kat.

‘I love matching woodmatt cabinetry with a charcoal splashback and a dark benchtop. To make a beautiful statement, consider adding a batten waterfall edge to your island bench.’
To ensure consistency and flow throughout your home and to create a luxe feeling, extend touches of black to your master ensuite. ‘Black never goes out of fashion, but play with how much or how little you use in each room,’ adds Kat.
Step two – Soften with coloured fixtures and fittings
While shades of black add an urban edge, it’s important you balance your space with a feeling of airy light and homeliness. Contrast your black fixtures with geometric white tiles and shades of light grey, along with gunmetal and stainless-steel finishes. ‘Sheers are another great way to soften your living spaces, particularly if you have tiled floors,’ adds Kat.
Step three – Bring the outside in
Honour the country lifestyle with the use of natural colours and subtle textures.
‘Furniture should be soft and inviting – think felt and tan leathers,’ suggests Kat. ‘Timber and concrete elements along with small patches of terrazzo also work well, but avoid any patterned or overtly bold elements. This look is about subtlety and moody finishes.’
Play with both light and inky blues as your feature colours – a subtle nod to the country sky.
‘Add a picture window to your kitchen to break up the monochromatic palette and to let sunlight stream in, and ensure you place plenty of potted greenery around the home,’ adds Kat.
