Jess and Jack, a married couple of eight years, had a clear vision for themselves and their two boys: Kaiden, 7, and Hudson, 4. The young family were keen to find a spacious block of land to build a brand-new home, complete with a puppy and plenty of space for the kids to play.

‘We decided to sell our house in Bacchus Marsh during the pandemic and buy land in Ballan. We were very particular about what we wanted in our forever home, and building meant we could incorporate all the design features important to us,’ explains Jess.

‘Our first family home had no storage and a tiny kitchen. We wanted somewhere with a country feel and a larger block to suit our growing family, but that was still within easy reach of our workplaces and Kaiden’s school.’

Moving to Ballarat allowed the pair to lock in a sizeable block at an affordable price. With Jess and Jack looking for a practical floorplan that maximised the use of their block, they fell in love with the double-storey, four-bedroom and two-bathroom Airlie 38 with Manor façade.

‘The Airlie 38 floorplan ticked all of our boxes, particularly in terms of its kitchen layout, separate living areas, a garage that connects to the mudroom, spacious walk-in-robes in the kids’ bedrooms, and plenty of storage,’ explains Jess.

‘The Manor was one of our favourite designs from the very beginning. As soon as we saw it in person on a display home, we knew it was ‘The One.’ It’s such a beautiful and unique façade with lots of intricate detailing.’

How to find the right builder

With a clear vision for their forever home, it were the floorplans that first drew Jess and Jack to Boutique Homes. However, the superior quality and customer service prompted them to sign on the dotted line.

‘We’d always been aware of Boutique Homes, and when we began visiting display homes, they were definitely a standout,’ says Jess.

‘I was extremely happy with our entire build experience. The quality of our home speaks for itself – we have had so many people comment on the workmanship of our home which wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing Site Supervisor.’

‘Our Customer Experience Coordinator also deserves a special mention – you read a lot about a poor pre-start experience, but she made the whole process so smooth,’ continues Jess.

The secret to such a positive build experience? Have a clear vision of what you are trying to achieve – including a list of must-haves – and plenty of research! ‘Trawl through colours and floorplans so you know exactly what’s out there and which builder can make your dream come to life,’ says Jess.

‘Pick a design that will work with your block, your needs and your budget,’ adds Jess. ‘And don’t sweat the small stuff – once you’re in your beautiful new home, none of them will matter.’

Creating our mixed-Hamptons interior style

Building during the middle of a pandemic didn’t stop Jess and Jack from creating a Hamptons-inspired interior design. Full of creamy whites and wicker, the home is bright and airy while still incorporating bold, black elements for a touch of the contemporary.

‘We were able to visit Boutique Homes’ suppliers, Surfaces by Hynes and Caesarstone, to look at our selections up close, which was really helpful,’ says Jess.

‘We also did a lot of research online, including on social media and Nicole, our Boutique Homes Interior Designer, was also great. Colour-wise, there’s honestly nothing I would change.’

As for their favourite room in the home?

‘Hands down, the kitchen! This space was so important to me – it’s the heart of the home and where I spend most of my time. Everybody compliments our kitchen, particularly the empty island bench and the window overlooking the backyard,’ says Jess.
