Interior Designer, Nikkayla, and Luke, a carpenter, know a thing or two about a quality home. Having experience building two other homes and careers in the industry, they’ve seen the best and worst in standards and workmanship. So, when it came time for the married couple to build their third home in their hometown of Bendigo, they knew exactly what to look for.

‘We love the process of building and being able to create a home that suits our needs and style from the very beginning,’ says Nikkayla.

‘We were both born and raised in Bendigo, so it’s always been home. We love the country feel and easy access to shops, schools, and parks as well as the 2-hour drive from Melbourne.’

After securing a half-acre block of land in Huntly close to friends and family and just a 10-minute drive from Bendigo’s town centre, the couple went looking for a home builder. They discovered Boutique Homes on social media and quickly did their due diligence by visiting the display home circuit in both Geelong and Melbourne.

In the end, the standard inclusions and the beautiful styling and workmanship of the display homes sealed the deal for Nikkayla and Luke.

‘We knew from experience how quickly upgrades could add up. Knowing that all of our must-haves were included as standard allowed us to stay within budget and offered us peace of mind,’ explains Nikkayla ‘I’d suggest all new home builders create a wish list from the outset – it definitely helped us!’

Looking back at their experience with the team, Nikkalya has only great things to say. ‘Our New Homes Consultant was really understanding of our needs in the initial planning phase, and our Customer Experience Coordinator was another great contact point throughout our build.’

Finding the perfect floorplan and façade

Nikkayla and Luke knew how important it would be to find a floorplan that fit their lifestyle and the orientation of their block. Even though they’d already decided to build with us, they understood the importance of getting the fundamental lifestyle elements right.

Looking for an open plan home that still felt functional and connected, the pair discovered all these qualities (and more) in the Riviera 32.

‘In our last home, the kitchen was quite disconnected from the living room. So, for this build, it was important that we felt together when using these main spaces,’ explains Nikkayla.

‘We loved the airy feel of the living, dining, and kitchen areas, and the master ensuite and laundry also receive honourable mentions.’

As for the façade? The couple wanted to make a statement while allowing Nikkayla to put her personal stamp on the design.

‘We first saw the Gallerie façade on a display home and we loved its grand impression,’ says Nikkayla. ‘I love mixing materials, so we integrated exposed brick for a great effect.’

Creating an interior design fit for an Interior Designer

Nikkayla drew on her design experience and talents to create a home aesthetic that she fondly labels ‘transitional.’ The unique style has a contemporary base with more traditional features, such as board and batten panelling and a feature fireplace.

‘I love the interest created by mixing interior styles together – it makes for a more individual feel that reflects you,’ says Nikkayla.

Having a clear end-goal made preparing for their Interior Design Consultation much easier. The pair made use of our social community and other customer posts to discover real-life examples of selections to help narrow down their choices. The conscientious couple then visited numerous display homes and ordered samples from suppliers to get a better feel of the key finishes.

‘The Interior Design Consultation was my favourite part of the pre-construction phase, for obvious reasons! Even with our extensive experience, our Interior Designer was really helpful. It was great to talk to someone with an in-depth knowledge of the inclusions and upgrades available,’ reflects Nikkayla.

‘Being able to produce a flat lay of our selections was also really helpful – an important step in the interior design process that a lot of builders miss.’

Our key piece of advice for first home builders

There are few more qualified to offer building advice than Nikkayla and Luke. For them, a stress-free build comes down to doing your research – on the builder, your floorplan, and your interior design palette.

‘No matter your level of planning, delays can happen, and last-minute decisions often need to be made. So, prepare for that,’ says Nikkayla.

‘But the most important thing is to learn from others and, if needed, hire professionals that can help you with the process. A lot of issues arise from a simple lack of knowledge.’
