The prospect of building on your own can be intimidating, but it can also be one of the most empowering and rewarding decisions you’ll ever make. That’s the message from Geelong-based customer, Tania, who recently built the Barcelona 28 with Contempo façade – absolutely solo!

‘Any big investment can be stressful, especially when doing it on your own. You don’t have someone to bounce ideas off or go to for reassurance,’ reflects Tania.

‘But building your dream home on your own is possible! It just takes planning and discipline.’

That, and the right team in your corner. Tania first heard about Boutique Homes from her friend seven years ago. An interior design enthusiast, Tania spent many weekends on the display home circuit over the years, but it wasn’t until she entered the Barcelona 32 at Gen Fyansford that she knew she had found ‘The One.’

‘I fell in love – the plan was well thought out, spacious, and light and bright. Having the theatre and office located at the front of the house also suited my business needs, keeping clients out of the living areas,’ says the freelance make-up artist.

‘I loved the walk-in robe and the nook in the master bedroom, which was perfect for setting up my personal beauty collection. I’ve also never lived in a house with such an open and spacious kitchen – I loved the wraparound bench and deep island.’

A fan of light-filled spaces, Tania opted for the Contempo façade with its wraparound window feature. ‘The façade includes beautiful, large windows the entire length of the master bedroom which, when coupled with the high ceilings, let in so much natural light and look stunning with floor-length sheer curtains.’

What to expect from the build process

‘The customer service was second-to-none from display homes to handover,’ says Tania. With a variety of displays conveniently located across Victoria, she took advantage of the knowledgeable New Homes Consultants to gather design inspiration.

‘Each display home was beautifully presented, with fantastic colour variations and professional styling that made you feel instantly at home. I think I would have visited the Armstrong display home 50 times!’ says Tania. ‘Having access to a knowledgeable salesperson to ask questions about price, design and the build process was invaluable.’

Despite a number of floorplan variations and requests from Tania, pre-construction went off without a hitch. This included amending the home to a three-bedroom design, while adding a powder room and butler’s pantry. This flexibility, coupled with upfront pricing and premium inclusions, made signing on the dotted line an easy decision.

As a busy career woman building entirely on her own, Tania also appreciated the consistent email updates and support from the team throughout her build.

‘My site supervisor went above and beyond – he even sent me photos of my home at the various stages of construction while I was on holiday!’ says Tania.

‘Every time I contacted Boutique Homes they responded in a timely and efficient manner. Nothing was ever too much trouble.’

Creating my unique interior design style

Mixing creamy whites with light timbers, dusty pinks and soaring ceilings, Tania describes her interior design as ‘contemporary with a touch of bohemian.’

‘Most people describe my style as ‘like a display home’ which I take as a huge compliment,’ she says. ‘It’s elegant, classic and simplistic, with elements of ‘wow.’

Tania invested heavily in the rooms most important to her, including the bathroom and kitchen. Upgraded Caesarstone benchtops, coupled with feature waterfall ends to the island bench, black tapware and a double shower to the ensuite, make for modern and luxurious spaces she couldn’t wait to get home to.

‘Last but certainly not least was my walk-in robe. Even though I was building the Barcelona 28, I just had to have the walk-in robe from the Barcelona 32 – it’s so beautiful and spacious!’ adds Tania.

The secret to her interior design success? Plenty of research and shared ideas. Building solo meant Tania really enjoyed connecting with likeminded customers on Instagram for design, landscaping and colour inspiration.

‘I also loved my Interior Design Consultation! The Interior Designer did a flat lay of the colour selections that I had chosen, which gave me a great visual of how the colour palette was coming together. The Interior Designer was really knowledgeable and provided great advice on design options that would fit within my budget,’ says Tania.

Tania’s top tips for building on your own

  1. Be brutally honest with yourself – It’s important to assess your finances and build within your means, as you don’t have a secondary income to rely on. Do your research and make sure you stick to your budget.
  2. Upgrade the more permanent items in your home – Invest in items that aren’t easy to change at a later date, such as your tiling, benchtops, ceiling height and window size.
  3. Enjoy the experience Building a home is a very special event and a huge achievement. Remember to soak it all in!
