Shane and Lorraine Gore spent the majority of their 40+ years of marriage enjoying the wildlife that frequented their beautiful five-acre property in Victoria’s Ballarat. But when Shane was suddenly diagnosed with cancer, they knew they had to downsize.

‘Shane bought the land when he was 18 years old and built the blue-stone homestead himself,’ shares Lorraine

‘We were lucky enough to find a block for our new home that was titled and ready to build on – a vacant lot in Delacombe, an outer suburb of Ballarat. It ticked all the boxes: a walking track along a natural waterway, wide streetscape and amenities close by,’ adds Lorraine.

‘We did a lot of research and spent many weekends looking at Victorian display homes, before finally deciding on a builder and a floorplan we were both happy with,’ explains Lorraine.

Two days before they were planning to sign with another builder, the pair went to visit their selected home design one last time. While Lorraine was talking to the Sales Consultant, Shane sneaked off to have a look at the Boutique home on display.

‘After much hesitation on my part and persuasion by Shane, I took a look too. I was so impressed, particularly with the kitchen and the size of the bedrooms and living areas. It was an easy decision to make – we were building with Boutique Homes,’ says Lorraine.

Shane and Lorraine signed up on the day. They knew the Riviera 26 with the Southampton façade was ‘The One’.

What to expect from the build journey

With the help of New Homes Consultant Dale Bennett, the couple were able to create the home of their dreams.

‘The inclusion of double glazed windows, a butler’s pantry, high ceilings and Caesarstone benchtops were great incentives, and Dale did such a great job of modifying the plans in the ways we needed,’ says Lorraine.

‘We also upgraded the door heights, added stacker doors to the alfresco, and installed refrigerated heating and cooling. Some of our favourite upgrades include the ducted vacuuming and a kick plate chute in the pantry,’ adds Lorraine.

Working with Dale to fit out their uniquely shaped block, the couple changed their fourth bedroom into a walk-through sitting room, one that is now filled with a majority of the natural light and a spot they use the most when reading a book or sitting for a morning coffee. While this was out of their control, one thing the pair were definite about was flipping their floorplan to optimise the natural light.

‘Shane also extended our alfresco area and built an outdoor fireplace for us to enjoy on the colder nights,’ shares Lorraine.

Finding our interior design style

Lorraine and Shane didn’t just fall in love with our display home in Geelong for the home design, but also the interior style fit out. ‘We used the display for inspiration for our kitchen and tried to follow suit with the cabinetry, tiles and benchtop,’ adds Lorraine.

With Hampton profiling and barn style fixtures throughout, Lorraine has kept the styling quite neutral in order to make the kitchen the hero.

‘I didn’t want to go with any fads or trends as I see how quickly they can go out of fashion. We kept our palette very neutral, adding colour and texture through rugs, leather lounges and timber accessories,’ explains Lorraine.

Moving from a tranquil, country home with a pond and forestry to wake up to, the couple were set on bringing a little piece of it with them.

‘We got rid of most of the antiques we had in our previous home, we kept and incorporated some of the more special pieces, which fit in perfectly,’ says Lorraine.

As for the outdoor alfresco, the fireplace and extension that Shane built has set the tone for what feels like a cottage style outdoors, with a fish bond, cladding on the roof and a restored door.

A final word on service

Lorraine and Shane’s build was a quick one: just 18 weeks of site time and only 12 months from the time the pair decided to sell to the time they were handed the keys to their new home. ‘A speedy process that wouldn’t have been possible without the efficiency, professionalism and care of the Boutique Homes team,’ says Lorraine.

‘The consistent updates and quick responses of our site supervisor, made our journey stress-free and enjoyable. What’s more, the added pressures and uncertainty due to COVID-19 did not upset the progress of the build,’ continues Lorraine.
