A mid-century modern interior style is an aesthetic you won’t quickly forget, especially when you give it a contemporary twist as seen at our Riviera 32 display home at Smiths Lane Estate in Clyde North.

Featuring, clean and simple lines coupled with leather upholstery, pops of black and a subtle call to nature, the Riviera 32 is a classy abode that has been styled to match the edgy Gallerie façade. Beautifully designed for both families and couples, the 32 square floorplan boasts an edgy aesthetic with a subtle hit of art-deco, while offering entertainers a beautiful indoor-outdoor flow and gourmet kitchen. For Boutique Homes’ Interior Design Manager, Kat Moore, this home is a nod to the nostalgia of the mid-century, while drawing inspiration from contemporary trends.

‘To successfully execute a mid-century interior style with a modern slant for today’s customers, I married nostalgia with a homely and fresh twist,’ says Kat.

‘The warm, moody tones of the Daniel Robertson Overland Pristine Cradle brick in the Gallerie façade helped set the foundation for the interior scheme.’

So how can you recreate a mid-century interior style in your own home? Below, Kat provides some insider trade secrets.

1. Create a dark and earthy base

A mid-century modern style is all about a dark, moody colour palette. Keep your base scheme neutral, with plenty of brown undertones.

‘Earthy browns are reminiscent of the mid-century era, while still aligning with modern trends. Think profiled timber battening, walnut cabinetry and leather upholstery,’ says Kat.

What not to do? ‘Steer away from too much grey to ensure your home remains warm and inviting,’ suggests Kat.

2. Add freshness through muted accent colours

Crisp whites and light window furnishings are a great way to contrast against the darker palette while adding freshness with a subtle accent colour. For Kat, a muted green was essential to bring this scheme together.

‘Using green was an important accent to evoke the feeling of calm and connection to nature. The addition of the walnut cabinetry further accentuated the stunning green hue,’ says Kat.

‘A mid-century, modern interior style can be quite bold and moody, so using lots of green accents is a great way to soften the overall palette.’

3. Incorporate unique modern elements

Make sure your mid-century home remains on trend by giving it a contemporary twist. Black elements help to add drama and ensure your home stays ‘in the now.’

‘I used pops of black in the tapware and dark batten cladding to key areas to offer dimension and interest. It’s also quite edgy which is pertinent to a mid-century style,’ says Kat.

‘Don’t be afraid to get creative and add other modern details, such as tiling the rear of the island bench or adding a nib wall to your shower.’

‘My favourite part of the home is the curved bench next to the window in the home office. It creates a lovely little reading corner and adds character to the space.’

4. Soften via your furnishings

This style is renowned for its furniture so use feature pieces to capture that nostalgic and homely vibe. Think standalone armchairs and tan leather upholstery, along with dramatic light fittings.

Kat’s number one tip? Ensure you achieve a balance between the modern and edgy style of a mid-century design and establish a sense of warmth and homeliness.

‘Soften with textured throws and cushions in rich tones. Used carefully, they are a great way to create a vibe,’ she says.
