The urban interior design style isn’t for the faint-hearted. But for those looking to make a daring statement, it’s sure to leave an impression. Featuring bold injections of black coupled with earthy timbers and marble, it offers an edgy interior with a strong sense of atmosphere.

‘This interior design is known for its wealth of dramatic contrasts,’ says Senior Interior Designer, Mitra Whittle.

‘Put it together in the right way – and in the right type of home – it’s also a style that remains warm and homely.’

The urban interior design features heavily in our impressive Barcelona 32 display home at Kaduna Park Estate in Officer South. That said, it’s an interior design that’s easy to create within your own four walls. Below, Mitra steps you through her top tips for creating a contemporary urban design.

Dare to go bold with your finishes and surfaces

The urban industrial interior design is all about daring black-on-black, particularly through your hard surfaces. Key rooms, such as the kitchen, are the perfect place to make a statement. Think Cinder Polytec cabinetry, grey benchtops, and textured splashbacks.

Replicate similar cabinetry and benchtop colour choices throughout your wet areas to create a cohesive experience.

‘Using an abundance of black finishes does require a home with plenty of natural light and space to ensure it doesn’t overpower the home. However, in the right house and when executed with balance, it works wonderfully,’ says Mitra.

‘At the Barcelona 32, I’ve played off the darker palette of the Southampton façade, bringing the Char and Ebony shades of the industrial brick and stained cladding into the interiors.’

Complete the look with statement pieces of black timber furniture in each room, such as a dining or coffee table in the living spaces or a timber desk in the study.

‘Black tapware and appliances are also a must, along with black metal chandeliers or pendant lighting in the bedrooms,’ adds Mitra.

Soften the palette with vibrant feature colours

While black may be the cornerstone for this dramatic colour scheme, inserting one to two vibrant tones provides relief from the predominately monochromatic palette.

At the Kaduna Park display home, Mitra has incorporated olive greens and shades of caramel to create a sense of comfort.

‘The feature colours are introduced heavily through the artwork and furniture with bursts of colourful bedding, tactile floor rugs, and throw cushions to provide contrast,’ says Mitra.

‘I also love adding a painted feature wall to select rooms. At Kaduna, the deep olive feature wall in the master bedroom balances perfectly with the soft browns of the surrounding furniture.’

Opt for oaky timber flooring throughout your living areas and dark grey carpets in the bedrooms to bring cohesiveness to the design.

Bring warmth to the space with foliage and artwork

Small details can help inject life and warmth into an edgy, urban design. Adhere to the contemporary theme by incorporating oversized, abstract artwork in your chosen feature colours.

‘Potted greenery and foliage help to soften the space and take the edge off the otherwise dark tones,’ adds Mitra.
