Colour trends come and go but grey will forever remain a design staple.

Customers might be reluctant to experiment with bold, grey tones however it’s an excellent colour choice to apply as a blank canvas to your home.

Boutique Homes’ Senior Interior Designer, Mitra Whittle, says ‘grey is sophisticated and inoffensive, no one can get upset with a grey.’

‘It is seen throughout the colour themes of nature – it is the colour of stone, the colour of concrete, it can be the colour of the sky, so it is ingrained in us that grey is a very acceptable theme to work with.’

Generally speaking, greys work best when used as a background as opposed to a feature. The colour also functions as a neutral backdrop to showcase your furniture pieces.

‘It’s just a good backdrop to a lot of things that’s why we welcome it for a lot of things: on the floors, as a feature wall, carpet or tiles so you can apply it en mass and apply features over it so it enhances what goes on it as opposed to itself being a feature,’ says Mitra.

Grey is easy to work with in interior design styling; it won’t clash with a lot of your furniture selections.

‘It’s very neutral; it goes well against dark colours, it goes well with bright colours. It is also gender-neutral and is well received by males, too,’ elaborates Mitra.

Choose a grey backdrop for your home and you can play up certain areas of your home to embody different feels, for example, pinks, creams and whites will create a more feminine feel while timber, blacks and browns will appear more masculine.

Grey tones also make other colour pieces pop such as bright yellow and teal, for that extra emphasis on coloured accents throughout your home.
