Gary Wilson has come a long way from his humble beginnings as an apprentice roof tiler. He’s now spent over ten years in various estimating and drafting positions, playing an integral role in the building process from sales right through to construction.

When he was offered Boutique’s Operations Manager position in May 2017, he jumped at the opportunity to build on his estimating background by delving into strategy.

“Working in the operations space allows me to spend time focussing on our client experience and looking for ways to continually improve what we do,” he says.

“It’s a varied position and no two days are the same. From spending time supporting the team to working with our supplier partners.”

Someone of Gary’s expertise and ambition could easily have moved through the ranks of Melbourne’s big corps. Instead, he chose to seek internal promotion – climbing from his position as Estimating Manager for Homebuyers Centre, to Estimating and Drafting, to his current management role with Boutique Homes.

He puts this staying power down to Boutique’s amazing culture and superior product.

“Boutique Homes’ has fantastic people, a fantastic product and the teams here do their upmost to achieve the best outcome for our clients,” says Gary.

“I’ve been lucky enough to work with a great team of dedicated people and in a busy environment with new challenges and projects to focus on.”

Growing with the Boutique team and helping others achieve their own career goals has been one of the most memorable trophies of Gary’s extensive career.

“It still amazes me how many people are still here from the day I started and where they have taken their careers,” he says.

“We do peer mentoring among the management team and spend time supporting each other through different topics. Watching the people from those groups develop into leaders of the business has been really special.”

This is evident in Gary’s continued career trajectory with his new appointment to the Victorian Operations Manager – Capability role in 2021. With the company experiencing steady growth, the new position provides Gary the platform to enable functional excellence, drive capability improvements and execute strategic initiatives across the entire Victorian Operations function.

His advice to budding young professionals keen on internal promotion? Hard work does get noticed and pays off in the long run.

“It’s cliché but perform the role you want now, and give people no choice as to who should be appointed when an opening becomes available,” says Gary.
