Modern and bright – 5 steps to creating a fresh contemporary interior design

Love the contemporary look but would prefer a lighter colour palette?

Interior Designer, Nadija Saluwadana took her inspiration from the painted brick and monochromatic palette of the home’s new Arlo façade, on display for the first time.

‘The Arlo is extremely unique – you won’t see this style offered by many other volume builders. Featuring a beautiful, curved wall and a monochromatic colour scheme, I wanted to thread similar theming through the interiors,’ says Nadija.

‘It’s also an extremely versatile interior design, suited for young families as it is to second homebuyers.’

 

Below, Nadija steps you though her top five tips for creating a fresh contemporary interior design in your own home:

1. Incorporate plenty of timber

While timber isn’t always synonymous with contemporary design, wood-like features are the foundation of a fresh contemporary interior. Look for light and subtle grains, particularly in your floors and cabinetry. At the Marseille 28 display home, Nadija chose to mix Hamptons Driftwood floors with Polytec’s Quartiera Maple cabinetry.

‘I love the Quartiera’s beautiful light finish, textured knots and cracks,’ says Nadija.

‘Light wood finishes bring freshness to a conventionally contemporary style and work perfectly with a palette of off-whites and light greys.’

Find ways to weave these subtle timber elements throughout other rooms in your home. Install half-height cladding to your main bedroom wall or a functional timber bench seat under the window in your study.

‘One of my favourite features of the Marseille 28 display home is the new and very functional layout of the main bedroom’s dressing area, featuring a timber shelf in Polytec’s Quartiera Maple,’ adds Nadija.

2. Use feature colours sparingly

To support the light, bright and fresh interior, use feature colours sparingly. In the Marseille 28 display, Nadija contrasted off-whites with brighter whites, subtle greys and beiges. For a splash of colour, shades of soft green are incorporated into artworks, throw cushions and other subtle features.

‘Choose a soft feature colour with light-grey undertones – nothing too moody or dark,’ says Nadija.

‘I love the painted half-height cladding detail used in the main bedroom of the Marseille 28. Here, the deeper green is used to offset the predominantly black and white palette of the room.’

Nadija has also incorporated light green-grey painted feature walls in the dining room and theatre of the Marseille 28 display home.

3. Select light and white furniture

Choose lighter framed furniture pieces that still have a contemporary shape and architectural feel. Look for curved tables and armchairs, rather than harsh, square edges. White and soft grey hues work best with hints of black, says Nadija.

‘Boucle furniture is trending in contemporary homes. I used this in the dining chairs, armchairs and bedheads throughout the Marseille 28 to add softness and texture,’ says Nadija.

4. Add black fixtures

Have a feeling your home will be too light and bright to remain contemporary? Add contrasting black fixtures, suggests Nadija. ‘Adding a little bit of black into your tapware, towel racks and appliances will break up the freshness of the interiors and bring a modern, monochromatic feel to your home,’ she says.

5. Keep your styling minimal

Less is more when it comes to styling a fresh contemporary interior. To ensure open and airy spaces, stick to minimal styling. Mistakenly adding too many elements will steer your interiors toward an eclectic feel.

‘Too many wallpapered or painted feature walls will result in your home looking busy.  In the Marseille display, I only used wallpaper in one of the additional bedrooms and it’s a very minimalist style, without complex patterns or colours,’ says Nadija.

‘Even your bedding should be light and minimal, without too many layers, to ensure a more modern feel.’
