Looking for a home that’ll have you dreaming of your next cosy Airbnb getaway – every day?

Balancing classical elements of country living with a contemporary palette, the cosy lodge interior design is both chic and homely.

‘Think of this style as incorporating all of the comforts of city living, mixed with the warmth and ruggedness of a tree-change setting. It’s nostalgic and perfectly suited to second or third homebuyers,’ says Boutique Homes Project Designer, Kat Moore, who executed this style at the Barcelona 32 display home in Mt Atkinson.

‘It’ll make you feel like you’re in a holiday retreat in the depths of the Dandenong Ranges. You’ll never want to leave.’

Below, Kat steps you through her no-frills formula for designing a chic and edgy lodge feel within your own home:

1. Begin with raked ceilings

Soaring ceilings are the hallmark of any high-end retreat and this cosy lodge style is no different. Raked ceilings help to create a sense of space, drama and grandeur.

‘Raked ceilings enhance natural light levels in the home. This is especially important when you are working with a darker interior colour palette,’ says Kat.

2. Use plenty of black

Bring a contemporary vibe to the traditional lodge-style interior by using plenty of black. Black ensures your home doesn’t date too quickly. It also adds a sense of sophistication and moodiness to your spaces.

‘At the Barcelona 32, this begins with the sleek black cabinetry used in the kitchen, complete with an inbuilt entertainers coffee station. The Polytec Black Ply has almost a ‘grey wash’ black finish and is a little softer than pure black,’ says Kat.

‘You can also bring pops of black into your furniture, prioritising structured geometric shapes and clean lines.’

This also goes for your light fittings. Black metal pendant lighting offers a cost-effective way to quickly elevate your rooms. ‘Don’t forget to include black tapware and window frames,’ adds Kat.

3. Incorporate deep and daring feature colours

Traditional country interior designs tend to include colours from nature that remind you of the surrounding countryside. The difference in the cosy lodge aesthetic? You have the freedom to play with moodier, deeper and darker hues.

‘At the Barcelona 32 display home, I used a deep green with an almost grey undertone as my primary feature colour. I then threaded hints of navy, tan and grey throughout each room,’ says Kat.

‘This is particularly impressive in the kitchen, with overhead cabinetry in Polytec’s Oasis and matching painted VJ panelling to the kitchen island bench. The green accent is offset with darker charcoal tiles in the kitchen and bathroom splashbacks.’

Other ways to bring your interiors to life with colour? Pops of your favourite hues in your bed linens, artworks and wallpapers.

‘I love to include hints of pattern and texture in feature wallpapers. For example, the tartan wallpaper used in the Barcelona 32 display home’s minor bedroom. It’s a very trendy way to create interest in a teenager’s room, while still adhering to the nostalgic lodge theme,’ says Kat.

‘I also used a striped wallpaper in deep green in the guest bedroom to create dimension and elevate the space.’

4. Prioritise wood-look and natural materials

When furnishing your home, think about the materials you might see wandering through a woodland or forest.

‘Timber-look finishes are the cornerstone of this style, creating warmth and texture. This begins with the floor. At the Barcelona 32 display home, I used Hamptons Ultra – Driftwood vinyl flooring,’ says Kat.

‘This is paired with VJ panelling to feature walls, such as the dark green-grey Dulux Hildegard panelling used in the theatre. For a functional pop of timber and to add warmth, incorporate open shelves or built-in cabinetry to your kitchen and wet areas.’

Other natural materials that work well with the lodge style include chocolate or tan leather, linens, and wools. Think chunky rugs and cushions, knitted throws or a leather chair.

5. Tell a rural story through your artworks

Bring the outdoors in with your artworks and greenery.

‘Ariel views of fields and watercolour landscapes with black frames should be front and centre,’ says Kat. ‘You can also give a nod to contemporary styling through abstract works painted in your feature colours.’

6. Don’t forget to create contrast

Don’t forget to break up this bold, dark style with lightness and punches of texture. This begins with your walls and doors – keep the majority white to balance the darker furnishings and open up your spaces.

‘The key is to provide contrast! Perhaps match a lighter linen couch and grey rug with throw cushions in your dark and bold feature colours,’ says Kat.

‘Don’t be afraid to be adventurous – a lodge should feel homely rather than overly curated or artsy. A great example is the main bathroom at the Barcelona 32 display home, with its off-centre mirror and sink, and bright green feature tiles that almost look homemade.’
