Can’t choose between the calming air of a coastal abode and the opulence of a modern interior design? You can have both!

The modern coastal style breaks away from a traditional beachy palette by using punches of brass tapware and luxurious furniture and fittings while remaining homely and inviting.

‘A luxurious coastal style is popular among our customers, offering a modern feel while maintaining the relaxed, light-filled ambiance of a Hamptons interior,’ explains Senior Interior Designer, Mitra Whittle.

‘It’s a style that suits many Victorian families – from those seeking a sea change to city dwellers who wish to be transported to a holiday retreat every day.’

Sounds like the type of home you would like to create? Below, Mitra walks you through three ways she brought this style to life in the Grange 45 in Gen Fyansford Estate.

1. Stick to a neutral base with one feature colour

Begin with a colour palette made up of creams and whites, particularly through your hard surfaces and finishes. This will make for a light, bright and airy aesthetic while allowing you the room to play with different colours, styles and trends in the future.

‘Introduce feature colours such as teal and clay to lift the mostly white palette and add a sense of character and personality,’ suggests Mitra.

‘You’ll notice the Grange 45 in Fyansford has pops of colour in the walls, furniture and soft furnishings. I’ve added a teal feature colour in the home theatre, master bedroom and study while showcasing a pop of peach in the guest bedroom.’

2. Introduce luxurious elements

Bringing to life the contemporary element of a modern-coastal style is all about extravagance, so select quality inclusions that are sure to impress. Think of a Jetmaster fireplace in the loungeroom or theatre and a freestanding bathtub in the master ensuite.

Styled elements of brushed brass are a standout opulent feature that has been featured heavily throughout this home.

‘Consider adding touches of luxury throughout your tapware, light fittings, cabinetry handles and decorations,’ says Mitra.

‘For those families who love to entertain, invest in your kitchen island bench and an extended alfresco – nothing says luxury coastal more than outdoor entertaining on a balmy summer night.’

3. Don’t forget your natural materials

Coastal style homes are best recognised by their profiled cabinetry and natural timber elements. So, don’t shy away from natural materials to bring this style to life.

‘I’ve used a light-timber Bora Bora flooring throughout the Grange 45, which contrasts well with the Calcultta profiling on the Polytec Blossom White cabinetry in the kitchen,’ shares Mitra.

The home also features the creamy Cloudburst Concrete benchtop from Caesarstone and Plantation Ash from Polytec across the exposed shelving, setting the tone for a fresh and calm aesthetic throughout the home.

‘This not only lifts the mood of the home but also adds another layer of colour and texture,’ adds Mitra.
