Proactive steps for silt pit maintenance

Overview

Maintaining silt pits around your property is of utmost importance when it comes to responsible land management. Although a simple task, if debris is allowed to build up in the base and block up the stormwater outlet, the floodwater has nowhere to go but potentially into your yard.

One of the primary functions of silt pits is to capture and retain water runoff, particularly during heavy rainfall. They play a vital role in stabilising moisture content of surrounding soils.

To maintain silt pits effectively, regular inspections and maintenance are necessary. Sediment accumulation should be periodically removed to maintain the storage capacity of the pit. To clean out it’s simply a matter of removing the grate, using some gloves and getting in there and removing the debris before it gets to the base of the storm water outlet.

Additionally, it is essential to monitor the surrounding area for any potential erosion or sedimentation sources and take appropriate preventive measures.
