Fancy yourself some Georgian inspired #interiorinspo? Senior Interior Designer Mitra Whittle outlines five tips to achieve the look.
1. Refined furniture
Furniture that complements a Georgian theme should be less chunky and more refined. ‘You can choose timber furniture, it could be black furniture or upholstered furniture, but make sure you strike a balance between solid furniture and contemporary by choosing pieces with curves and which make the room feel more elegant and less modern,’ explains Mitra.
2. Traditional colours
When styling a Georgian inspired home, Mitra suggests a black and white colour theme. You can still integrate some colour, depending on your style and taste, and still maintain a Georgian theme.
‘Certainly there is nothing against colour, simply choose anything that’s not too bright,’ says Mitra.
‘Traditional colours, for instance, include navy, burgundy, Wedgewood blue, even gold tones or mustards,’ suggests Mitra.
3. Rich textures
Texture is a very important element from the Georgian era. Choose fabrics of a luxurious texture such as velvet and thick-weave fabrics to give a classical feel—and steer clear of linen as it gives more of a coastal feel.
Fabrics can also include a pattern; Georgian style has a certain amount of geometry in it so not too much floral. Stick with minimalistic patterns and geometrics.
4. Deluxe mouldings
Mouldings provide symmetry and Georgian is all about symmetry so maintain that angular feel by using cornices, mouldings or panelling.
‘But if you do it shouldn’t be over ornate, it must have an element of ‘breaking the space’ and create a little point of difference. It needs to be elegant but not overly done, it needs to have some tradition kept in it,’ explains Mitra.
5. Subtle accents
Subtle accents around the home help to achieve just a hint of classical opulence. Accents could include ‘brass or chrome accessories – both are relevant, both work out quite well,’ says Mitra.
‘Warm tone timber panelling, decorative lighting—chandeliers but not crystal, more homely looking—and panelled kitchen cabinetry with decorative handles.’
Georgian is more achievable and relevant than most people think. It is also liveable and timeless.
‘The fact that Georgian is very elegant means it won’t date. It’s always a standard scheme, it doesn’t come and go like industrial, for example, or shabby chic,’ highlights Mitra.
‘You can have formal areas as well as informal areas, but still treat it with the same level of elegance and you can achieve a level of comfort but still maintain a class to it. That’s what I like most about Georgian.’
