The Havana 32 at Botanical Estate in Melbourne’s North is where contemporary encounters country and practicality meets stunning style.

The display home in Melbourne features the Provincial façade and draws on the Australian countryside’s rolling hills and red earth as inspiration. Boutique’s Senior Interior Designer, Mitra Whittle, wanted to create a home that was moody and modern, yet still warm and inviting.

“I went with a simplified colour palette, with muted tones of tanned leather and rust – not too orange – in the accessories, soft furnishings and prints. It works perfectly with the lighter polished floors and the veins of the kitchen’s benchtops in Symphony Grey,” explains Mitra.

“I then offset that richness with dark, bold furniture by using a formula that is still very welcoming, yet not harsh in any way.”

Beyond the stylish aesthetics, what sets this home apart is its practicality and user-friendly layout. Connected and versatile – from the homely living areas and home theatre at the front of the house, to the entertaining areas and master bedroom towards the back – every area of the home is well proportioned and well defined, with zero wasted space.

Add to this the generously sized powder room, spacious his and her walk-in robes and clever kids’ rumpus room, and you have the dream family home.

Interior design that takes advantage of the premium floor plan

“The layout of this home is absolutely outstanding, and I really wanted to do it justice by working with the defined living spaces rather than against them,” explains Mitra.

“One example is the island bench near the kitchen. It’s chunky and has a real presence – almost like another dining area. I made this space quite formal through the hanging pendants, which play on similar elements used in the home’s primary dining space, so the interiors all match and make sense.”

How can I create my own piece of modern country Australia?

Mitra’s suggestions include a considered use of greenery, accessories, prints and throws to bring cohesiveness and flow to the design of each and every room; be it the rust-coloured blanket on the bed of the master bedroom or the grey-toned tribal vases featured throughout the living spaces.

But first, she says find your inspirational piece of furniture and run with it.

“For me, it was the ottoman in the loungeroom. It was the first piece of furniture I saw and thought ‘wow, this works’ – it became a real focal point of the home,” she explains.
