As temperatures begin to drop and streets start to fill with fallen leaves, it provides a fantastic cue to think about how to prepare your home for autumn. From practical tasks such as clearing your gutters to the more design focused like adding a fresh coat of paint and a woolly throw, now is the time to rehash your style for the cooler months ahead.

Below, our Interior Design team provide their top tips for creating a stunning autumn aesthetic.

1. Play with autumnal colours

The easiest way to makeover your space for autumn is to play with rustic colours. Keep to darker, muted hues with a grey undertone. Autumn is the season of landscape change – so think terracotta and mustard yellows; burgundy rather than bright reds; browns and sage – colours that remind you of falling leaves and nature.

Bedrooms are an easy space to transform with a warmer duvet cover in burnt orange and layered throws. Or, for a more permanent option, add an autumnal inspired feature wall using paint or cladding.

For living spaces, a scatter of throw pillows works well, along with changing up your artworks with colourful, contemporary pieces. Keep the aesthetic messy and oversized for a truly cosy feel.

2. Add in natural textures

Bring the outside in with rich textures and natural materials. Chunky linens and woven throws, along with shaggy rugs in your lounge room or at the foot of your bed, create a feeling of warmth while keeping with the earthy, autumn themes.

Just ensure materials aren’t too heavy as you’ll begin to creep into a winter vibe. For a feature purchase, consider the opulence of a velvet armchair or a boucle chaise.

3. Swap white light for warmer globes

With the sun starting to set earlier, now is the perfect time to turn off your overhead lights and turn on your ambient lighting. Floor and table lamps with warmer, yellow-coloured globes and darker, patterned lampshades bring a beautiful soothing glow to your living spaces or master bedroom.

Accent lighting in the form of wall lamps also helps create a cosy ambiance, as do candles and tea lights. Check out the Riviera 32 display home at Smiths Lane in Clyde North for an example of comfort lighting.

4. Don’t forget your autumn accessories

Autumn accessories are a simple way to create a cosy vibe. It can be as simple as adding a rich spiced or cinnamon candle, a wooden bowl or vase to your coffee table, and swapping out your usual houseplants with a dried bouquet.

Autumn calls for a pared-back vibe of stems or dried flowers in oranges and warm reds.

5. Prep your outdoor area

While temperatures dip in autumn, it doesn’t mean that outside entertaining is completely off the cards. While BBQs are temporarily on hold, consider creating an autumn nook in your alfresco, complete with an outdoor lounge and coffee table – perfect for curling up with a hot chocolate or glass of red.

If you have a gas port, consider investing in an outdoor fireplace (you won’t regret it!) and include textured throw cushions and rolled-up blankets ready for guests to snuggle into. Complete the look with a string of fairy lights to create a romantic and intimate mood for your autumn soirees.

6. Be diligent with your home maintenance

With leaves falling and more rainfall and wind expected, now is the time to perform your home maintenance duties. Clear your gutters and downpipes, and check for any cracks around your outdoor windows or loose tin on your roof.

While all our homes come with high-quality insulation and double glazed windows as standard, check for any draughts coming under your doors. If needed, replace your weather stripping to ensure your home is as energy-efficient as possible. And don’t forget your garden – additional rain means it can quickly become overgrown. Cut back your lawn and hedges and give your perennials a good trim.
