Proving that ultra-modern can still be relaxing, homely and not entirely monochromatic, Senior Interior Designer Mitra Whittle put an earthy and edgy spin on the modern style in our Oslo 29 display home in Orana Estate at Clyde North.

‘It’s young, vibrant and edgy, while its clean lines and neutral colour base will stand the test of time,’ says Mitra.

Ready to create an earthy-modern interior design in your own home? Here are Mitra’s top tips.

1. Select strong accent colours

‘For longevity, it’s worth sticking to a neutral colour base of greys and whites for your hard surfaces and carpets. However, don’t be afraid to mix in vibrant and edgy accent colours’, explains Mitra.

‘Enhance the space with a strong burgundy and a contrasting deep green in feature walls, fabrics and artworks. These are items that can be easily removed or replaced when you’re ready for a fresh look,’ she says.

‘Keep tiles and benchtops in more contemporary colours. Don’t forget to complete the look with black tapware, handles and fittings.’

2. Invest in cladding

Cladding adds dimension and interest to smaller spaces while bringing in a wood element that appeals to a rustic design.

‘Add VJ panelling to the main feature wall in your bedroom or to a key drop area at the entrance to help set the interior tone from the outset. I also love the use of cladding to create a unique island bench feature in the kitchen,’ says Mitra.

‘For the Oslo 29 display, I kept the panelling in the master bedroom the same colour as the rest of the room to ensure the beautiful bedhead became a feature element.’

Carry this wood theme throughout the home with an oak timber floorboard, as well as your furniture and cabinetry. Think heavy timber coffee tables and cabinetry in Woodmatt finishes such as Polytec’s Havana Oak.

3. Add soft textures and details

Offset the modern interiors with softer details and textures, suggets Mitra. Potted greenery is a great way to ensure your home remains warm and inviting, while simple ceiling and wall pendants will help to give your space personality.

‘Black soft-edged furniture brings a tactile element to this interior design, while keeping to the modern theme,’ adds Mitra. ‘Use lots of dimensional fabrics, such as the very fashionable and retro Boucle fabrics, for ottomans or bedheads.’
