2. Opt for geometric furniture
Modern furniture is smooth and geometric – as if sculpted in an art gallery. Look for bare legs and slim metal bases, and introduce texture through your ottomans, linens and chairs.
‘The interior should feature a mixture of both straight and elegantly curved lines that are as simple as possible,’ says Nadija.

‘All furniture pieces should have an element of black within them – be it the slim metal legs on an armchair or a black timber coffee table.’
For added effect, consider layering different elements throughout the home. ‘Everything from the tiling and furniture to the pendant lighting and asymmetrical chandeliers should create a sculptured sense of movement and interest,’ says Nadija.
Include a textured grey rug and throw pillows or structured upholstery to keep your living spaces feeling warm and homely.

3. Create interest with modern artwork
Given that a modern style is inherently minimalistic, artwork provides the opportunity to get creative and to personalise your space. Incorporate a splash of your accent colours within your paintings, especially in your living spaces.
‘Oversized abstract artwork works perfectly in a modern contemporary space,’ says Nadija.
‘You can also incorporate carefully curated sculptures that have a subtle, artistic feel.’
