How to build a New York penthouse style home

1. Bring warmth through timber-look flooring

Wood-look flooring brings warmth and homeliness to your space is the perfect base for a New York penthouse interior.

‘Look for warmer toned grains to compliment the dark, bold cabinetry,’ says Mitra.

‘At Boutique’s Evergreen display, I opted for the high-quality Bora Bora Oak.’

2. Prioritise a contrasting colour palette

Striking contrast is the aim of the game in every New York penthouse. Stick to a predominantly monochromatic base, particularly through your hard surfaces. This will also contrast beautifully with your wood-look flooring.

‘There’s no better example of this than the Evergreen kitchen. I opted for Polytec Black Woodmatt cabinetry to the base and Thermo Barri matt black profiled overheads to add subtle texture, coupled with Empire White for the benchtop and splashback,’ says Mitra.

Finishes to avoid? Chromes and brass, says Mitra. Instead, stick to gun metals, black and charcoals through your tapware and appliances.

3. Create dimension through feature cladding

Keep things interesting by bringing dimension to your living spaces. Feature cladding brings texture and a sense of drama to key rooms, plus is a dramatic feature your guests won’t forget.

‘Use on the walls where you want the eye to be drawn, such as the wall that houses your TV in your lounge or theatre, or your main bedroom,’ says Mitra.

‘At the Evergreen, I used the channel 25 grooving cladding highlighting it in a feature colour’

4. Look for furniture in contemporary shapes

Look for modern furniture with tubular features. While furniture can be chunky and have presence, be careful not to overfill the space. New York penthouses are all about clean lines and plenty of space – it shouldn’t feel cluttered.

‘Think a strong oval shaped dining table or concrete-style outdoor dining; curved armchairs with black spindle legs, and dark timber furniture,’ says Mitra.

‘Textured boucle accent armchairs and sofas are also extremely popular.’

It’s all about texture and softness to break up the severeness of the palette, without losing the modern feel,’ says Mitra, who suggests introducing pops of muted accent colours for warmth

5. Soften with texture and feature colours

A modern-contemporary home without losing a sense of homeliness? It is possible, says Mitra.

‘At the Evergreen, I chose a beautiful navy blue and touches of cinnamon and terracotta to lift the palette. The result is a sophisticated scheme that still appeals to younger couples and families.’

By keeping your feature colours in textured cushions, bedding and abstract artworks, you can easily change up your feature colours seasonally. Just avoid plush or patterned fabrics – stick to geometric shapes, in keeping with the modern scheme.

‘I love introducing darker rugs and sheer grey curtains through the living areas for an extra layer of softness,’ says Mitra.

‘And, as with all schemes, don’t forget to bring in plenty of greenery and foliage to ensure your home feels fresh.’
