Interior Home Maintenance

Cleaning checklist to keep your home looking its best

Keeping your brand-new home looking as great as when you first received your keys is easier than you think. All it takes is a little planning, some warm soapy water, and a few specialist cleaning products.

That said, choose the wrong product for the incorrect surface – or forget to properly maintain your interiors – and you could invite some expensive trade bills.

Below, our specialist Home Assist team provides their top cleaning tips that’ll keep your new home looking its best.

Top tips for cleaning your kitchen

Polish your benchtops

As part of our premium standard inclusions, you’ll receive high-quality (yet low maintenance) Caesarstone kitchen and island benchtops. For a streak-free clean, wipe with warm soapy water or a specialist stone spray followed by a clean, dry cloth. For tougher stains, such as paint or glue, dab with a little methylated spirit before rinsing and drying. Hot tip. Avoid using your dishwashing cloth to clean your benches, as it may transfer oil and grime to your Caesarstone benchtops.

FC: Daily.

Protect your kitchen cupboards

Like most kitchen cupboards, Polytec doors are moisture resistant but not completely waterproof. For general cleaning, wipe your cupboards with warm soapy water and thoroughly dry with a soft microfibre cloth. Similar to your benchtops, you can attack stubborn marks with a dab of methylated spirits. Just ensure you don’t rub too hard or you’ll risk damaging the finish on your cabinetry.

FC: Once per week or as needed.

Say goodbye to fingerprints on your stainless-steel appliances

Use warm soapy water followed by a dry cloth to clean and polish your in-built appliances. To remove marks and stubborn fingerprints, place a small amount of baby oil or a specialist stainless steel spray on a soft cloth and wipe away.

FC: Once per week or as needed.

Clean your gas cooktop

Regularly clean your gas cooktops with a non-toxic degreaser and soft scourer. To make your life easier, remove the burners and grates and soak them in a solution of degreaser and water before wiping them down.

FC: Daily or as needed, depending on how often you cook.

Manage your microwave

Are you sick of scrubbing stubborn marks off the inside of your microwave? Try this trick. Mix four tablespoons of lemon juice into one cup of water. Pour the mixture into a microwave safe bowl and place it in your microwave on high for five minutes. As the mixture boils, the vapours will condense on the inside walls of the microwave, helping to soften caked-on grease. After five minutes, use a soft cloth to wipe.

FC: Weekly or as needed.

Revive your oven

Remove the wire racks and soak them in a sink full of dishwashing liquid for a few hours before scrubbing them clean. Use a metal spatula to remove any food residue stuck to the door or walls, then coat the areas in a specialist oven cleaner. Leave to soak for 20 minutes before wiping clean.

FC: Once per month, depending on how often you cook.

Top tips for maintaining your new kitchen

Deep clean your sink

While you’re probably wiping down your stainless-steel sink daily using soapy water, for a deeper clean, try this: insert the plug and half fill the sink with water. Place two denture cleaning tablets in the water and leave overnight – you’ll be shocked at the level of shine the next morning. You can use the same water to wipe down your taps and faucet.

FC: Once per week.

Deodorise your dishwasher

To ensure your dishwasher doesn’t develop a stench, give it a deep clean. Empty your dishwasher, and then fill a dishwasher-safe cup with white vinegar and place it on the top shelf. Then, run the dishwasher through a full cycle on its hottest setting. Remember to also remove the drain trap at the bottom of the dishwasher and give it a thorough clean using an old toothbrush and dish soap. This will remove any stubborn food bits and mould.

FC: Once per month.

Service your plumbing

To avoid expensive plumbing bills, give your kitchen pipes a once-over. Inspect your tapware, S-trap, aerator, and wastes, removing any built-up food and grime as you go. While you’re at it, use a spanner to tighten your mixer handles and joinery.

FC: Annually.

Top tips for cleaning your living spaces

Keep hardwood floors looking fresh

Always vacuum or dry mop your wood floors before wet mopping (hybrid or laminate flooring) or using timber-specific cleaning products (engineered timber). Use a sock to buff away small marks on your timber floors or, for larger marks, use a little baking soda on a damp cloth. Don’t forget to rinse with a damp paper towel and then dry with a soft cloth.

FC: Weekly.

Mop your tiles

Despite what cleaning products may tell you on their labels, it’s best not to use harsh chemicals on your porcelain or ceramic tiles as they can wear away the grout. Instead, use a mild detergent mixed with water to mop away any debris. Where possible, use a fabric mop head or rag, rather than a sponge, to avoid staining your grout with dirty water.

FC: Every few days or as needed.

Make your windows glean

For a superior clean to your double glazed windows, without the use of harsh chemicals, mix one tablespoon of cornstarch with a litre of warm water. Dip a rag into the mixture and wipe down the glass. Finish with a soft cloth.

FC: Weekly or as needed.

Dust your blinds

Don’t forget to dust the tops of your venetian and roman blinds using a soft cloth or the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. For a deeper clean, close the blinds and use a mixture of warm water and vinegar to wipe each slat. For wooden venetians, use furniture polish.

FC: Weekly or as needed.

Remove stubborn marks from walls

A damp sponge sprinkled with a little baking soda is enough to buff away most wall marks.

FC: As needed.

Don’t forget your flyscreens and windowsills

There’s little point keeping your windows gleaning if your flyscreens are filthy. To clean, remove the screens and place them in your bath or shower. Use warm soapy water and a soft bristle brush to remove built up grime and allow them to dry before reinstalling. While you’re at it, wipe down your window tracks and clear window weep holes using a wire hanger.

FC: Quarterly.

Top tips for cleaning your bathrooms

Make your toilet sparkle

Coat your toilet bowl (including underneath the rim) with a toilet cleaner. Leave to sit for five minutes before scrubbing with a toilet brush. Notice stubborn limescale? A bottle of flat Coke or Pepsi may help. Use a brush to coat the bowl with the cool drink and leave overnight for a shiny clean. Don’t forget to wipe down your toilet seat and exteriors with disinfectant wipes.

FC: Once per week.

Remove hardwater stains in your bathroom

Hardwater stains can quickly age your shower walls, bath, and chrome fittings. The good news is that vinegar can help! Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz the impacted areas. Let the solution sit for 15 minutes before wiping away with a soft cloth.

FC: Weekly.

Top tips for maintaining your bathrooms

Kill bathroom mould

Mix three drops of clove oil into one litre of water and apply to impacted areas to kill the spores. Larger infestations may need the help of a professional.

FC: As needed.

Unblock your shower head

Not experiencing the same shower pressure as you once did? Your shower head may be clogged with lime and other minerals. To unclog your shower head, mix white vinegar and water in a plastic bag. Tie the bag around the head of your shower, ensuring that the holes are fully immersed in the solution. After about an hour, the minerals will have loosened, allowing you to easily scrub them away with an old toothbrush. To rinse, run your hot water tap for about a minute.

FC: Once per month.

Release bathroom drains

Is your sink draining slowly? Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar. The reaction between the two ingredients will help dissolve away hair and mineral that are likely the source of the problem. Wait five minutes before flushing the drain with warm water.

FC: As needed.

Top tips for cleaning your bedrooms

Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum

Regularly vacuuming your carpets not only keeps them looking their best but it also helps with longevity. It also removes abrasive dust and debris that can quickly wear down carpet fibres.

FC: Once to twice per week.

Disinfect your carpets

A semi-regular steam clean is well worth the spend. Not only does it remove built-up dirt and stubborn stains from your carpets, but it can also eliminate bacteria and allergens that can impact your health. You can invest in a professional clean or purchase a steam cleaner – just be sure to follow the instructions carefully

FC: Once per year (or twice per year if you have pets).

Clear furniture indentations

Decided to move your bedroom furniture around? You’ve probably noticed an indentation or two on your carpet. The good news is that you can remove them! Place a tea towel over the indentation and press a warm iron around the area – the heat will lift the fibres and tame the indentation. Just be sure to avoid this technique on synthetic or synthetic blend carpets.

FC: As needed.
